Our first reading is from the book of Deuteronomy, the last book of the Torah or the Pentateuch. The one of his speeches recorded here in Deuteronomy chapter 18:15-20, is extremely interesting. “A prophet like me, will the LORD, your God, raise up for you from among your own kindred; that is the one to whom you shall listen.” Why is it a peculiar passage? The speaker here is Moses. Moses is the greatest figure in the Old Testament; Moses is the one to whom God spoke from the burning bush; Moses who was called by God to liberate the people of Israel; Moses who led the Israelites across the desert to Mount Sinai; Moses who received from God Himself the 10 commandments; Moses who saw God face to face and talked to Him as his actual friend. If God has given the Torah (the Law) to Moses, then from Moses, the sole authority is derived. Whenever a Scribe or a Rabbi teaches within the Israelite tradition, he is appealing finally to the great authority of Moses. If the authority is derived from Moses, why he must say, “A prophet like me, God will raise up and to Him you shall listen.” This teaching of Moses causes anxiety among the Israelites. Who would be that person, that is greater than Moses? Every time, when the prophets arose like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, etc., people must have thought that, ‘maybe he is the one’ that Moses talked about.
If we read today’s Gospel (Mk 1:21-28), then we will be able to understand the Moses’ prediction about the prophet greater than him. We see that Jesus is teaching and preaching in the Synagogue. Usually, Teachers of the law and Rabbis of the Old Testament were teaching in the style of former Prophets and Rabbis. But Jesus was preaching the Word of God obviously in a different way. The people were astonished at His teaching. For, He taught them as one having the authority. Who could possibly teach with that kind of Authority, if he is not the one who is greater than Moses who saw God face to face and talked to him as his friend?
Let’s see what happens here. There emerges in the Synagogue, a man with the unclean spirit. The first demon that Jesus comes across, is in the Synagogue (a house of worship). In other word, we can say that the first demon comes up in the Church. We think that there must be a great enemy of the church outside. No, it is from within the church, that there is dark and negative divisive spirit arises.
But the man with unclean spirit cries out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? “A single person speaks as if he is plural. That is diabolic. Diabolic means, to scatter, to divide. He is divided within oneself. When we live in divided or diabolic self, it gives rise to division all around it. All the divisions, hatred, violence, revenge that emerge against God’s creation.
What did Jesus say? “Quiet, come out of him.” And with that the demon left him. Here, Jesus is not appealing to Moses. With his own voice he commands him and the demon leaves. All were amazed at his teaching and asked one another, “what is this?” a new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirit and they obey him. Jesus is God himself healing his divided creation. As Moses predicted; “A prophet like me, will the LORD, your God, raise up for us”, then we must listen to him. The divinity of Jesus is revealed in the authority by which he speaks. Believing in Jesus and accepting Him as our Lord God is what Christianity is all about. Let us pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit so that we can always listen to the words of our Lord Jesus and follow His will.

Prophet Jonah
The first reading for the 3rd Ordinary Sunday is about the Mission of the Prophet Jonah. Prophet Jonah receives a mission from God. The word of the Lord came to Jonah, son of Amittai, saying “ Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” Like the other biblical prophets, Jonah too heard the Voice of God. Perhaps, we might hear voices around us, like the voices of our families, friends, our culture and so on. Those are the voices that determined by what we think and what we do. But the Voice of God is, what God wants me to do? Prophet Jonah was afraid when he heard the voice of God to go on Mission. Because it was a difficult mission to go to Nineveh to preach repentance. And the command is to go into the city to proclaim repentance and to tell the people how wrong they are. That’s the mission has been given to Jonah.
Thomas Merton says, “If you are facing two options and one of them is harder. The harder one is more likely the will of God”. It is always challenging. Jonah was told to go to Nineveh, instead he goes to Tarshish which is very far from Nineveh. He goes as far as he can in the opposite direction. In some degree, this is all of us. We know what God wants from us and we do the opposite way. We know where God wants us to go and we move into the opposite direction.
Jonah sets out with all the people and board the ship bound for Tarshish. And the storm comes up. For ancient Israel, the stormy sea was a symbol of something negative. It stands opposed to God`s intention. So, the storm threatens not only Jonah but also all those who on board ship with him. Resisting God`s will causes storms in us and it also causes trouble for people around us. Because we are connected with each other. When I resist what God wants me to do, or what God wants me to be, it causes the trouble for me as well as for the people whom I am supposed to bring closer to God.
When Jonah realized that he became a problem by resisting God`s plans, he said to the people “pick me up and throw me into the sea”. They threw him into the sea and the sea ceased from its raging. Then at that moment, God sends a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And then for three days he lives in the belly of the fish. We cannot run away from God. As Psalmist says: “If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, your right hand shall hold me.” (Psalm 139:8-9) That’s what Jonah discovers. All things are under God’s providence. He is swallowed up by the fish. It is negative of course; it is constraining of Jonah to live inside of a fish for three days. As Jonah is now in the belly of fish, he is being trained and disciplined according to the Will and Purpose of God. The prayer of Jonah from inside the belly of the fish “from the depths I cry to you O lord”. Every one of us at different times, we find ourselves in this condition. We might name it as depression, anxiety, deep frustration, we fear our life is not going to be easy. We feel constrained. We can read it as, God is swallowing up our “aren’t” wills, in order to bring us back on line.
God answers our prayers. How do we know? When the Lord spoke to the fish and spewed Jonah out upon the dry land. When Jonah comes to Nineveh, he undertakes now the Divine Mission. People of Nineveh believed God, they proclaimed the fast and everyone great and small put-on sack cloth. When the news reached to the King of Nineveh and he rose from his throne and removed his robe and covered himself with sack clothes and sat in ashes. Jonah as reluctant prophet now becomes the greatest penitential preacher. Whom do we trust? Whose voice do we listen to? Whose Will we follow? Your own “will” or the “will” of the people around you or the “Will” of God? Nineveh was called to repentance. Our secular society today, which is grown in many ways, indifference toward God. Might be the case right now, God is raising up “Jonas” for a mission. You might be one of them. If God is calling to preach repentance, what’s your reaction to His Command? If you allow yourself to be carried by the will of God, you might be the “Jonah” of present time.

This year we celebrate the 800th anniversary of Christmas at of Greccio. Greccio a small town of Italy has a spiritual atmosphere similar to holy town of Bethlehem. Greccio is better known as Franciscan Bethlehem.
It was at Greccio that St. Francis of Assisi prepared the first manger (crib) in 1223. Today, the tradition of making mangers is the part of the Christmas. For St. Francis of Assisi, the Nativity of the Lord Jesus, the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God, was an amazing event of God's profound humility. One of St. Francis' deepest longings was to see and experience for himself the true humility of God.
In 1223, on the Feast of the Nativity of the Lord, St. Francis used his creative imagination to recreate the Nativity scene in the celebration of the Eucharist, in order to contemplate and celebrate the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God. When the manger was first prepared in 1223, there were no statues. There were only cow and ass and hay.
On the night of the solemn celebration, the Holy man of God, St. Francis had a wonderful vision. The holy child was lying in a manger. St. Francis held this holy infant in his arms. And that child was the infant Jesus of Bethlehem. Greccio turned into a new Bethlehem.

Third Sunday of advent
The third Sunday of Advent is traditionally called “Gaudete Sunday.” Gaudete is a Latin imperative. It's a command. So, the Church is telling us to be happy and it gives us in the first reading (Isaiah 61:1-2, 10-11), the reasons why we should rejoice. “The Messiah” and of course, it's Jesus himself who confirms this interpretation. Because at the beginning of his public life, when he gets up in the synagogue and it's his prerogative to choose the Scripture text and to comment upon it. Jesus precisely chooses this text (Luke 4:18, Is 61:1-2) that we're reading on Gaudete Sunday.
1. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, He has anointed me, and He has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor.
“Glad tidings” - it means good news to the poor. Jesus spends reaching out to those who are poor. But he is also talking about the spiritually poor? Indeed, we hear that, in the gospels, in the Sermon of mount, “Blessed are the poor in spirit” What does that mean to be poor in spirit? And what he meant was those who are far from God, those who have lost the sense of meaning and purpose. Jesus’ life was all about announcing good news not only to those who are economically poor but also to the existentially poor. -That's why we rejoice, because all of us who are poor to varying degrees have been addressed by this good news.
2. He's anointed “to heal the brokenhearted.”
We speak of heartbreak as a kind of emotional suffering. But “the heart” in the Bible means that deepest center of thought and feeling and action. It's closer probably what we mean by the word “soul.” It's the very center of a person. Think of all the various things we’re engaged in: our relationships, our families, our work and all that we do. But at the ground of all of that, there's the heart. And the heart is meant to be in union with God. So, who are the broken hearted? It's all of us. All of us who's hearts have been alienated from God, and therefore we experience a deep sadness in our hearts. What's Jesus come to do? He has come to Heal the broken hearted. He has come to save, to restore us to friendship with God. And when we experience that we will rejoice.
3. He’s anointed “to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners.”
Captivity means to be imprisoned. It's one of the great metaphors for sin in the Bible. The soul is meant to fly. The soul is meant to reach out to the wider world in relationship in love. The soul is meant to reach out finally to God. What does Sin do? St. Augustine calls it being “Incurvatus in se.” It means “caved in on myself.” I'm not seeking relationship and friendship with God. I'm so preoccupied with my own little concerns that I've caved in around myself, and I've locked myself thereby into a prison. It is not a literal prison. But this spiritual prison that all of us sinners are in. Many people are caught in an addictive pattern. You can't break out. The Messiah has come to liberate us from all these forms of self-imposed imprisonment. On the cross Christ becomes sin so as to bring the Divine Mercy and forgiveness, and liberation even into those darkest places. All of us sinners are to varying degrees in prison and addiction, because all sin is a type of addiction.
So, pray to the Lord: “Lord, I know I'm in prison, and so I'm awaiting the good news that you've come to liberate me.” And therefore “Gaudete!” Rejoice! May God bless us all.

Isaiah 63:17, 64:17
Why do you let us wander, O LORD, from your ways, and harden our hearts so that we fear you not?
64:17
No ear has ever heard, no eye ever seen, any God but you
doing such deeds for those who wait for him.
Would that you might meet us doing right,
that we were mindful of you in our ways!
Behold, you are angry, and we are sinful.
The season of Advent, like Lent, is properly a penitential season. To enter into Advent is to prepare for the coming of the Savior. It is to enter into our need for a savior. We have to feel our need for a savior. If we don't feel the need, then Jesus is just an interesting figure or a great ethical teacher. Jesus is the Savior who saves us from all evil. It’s to recognize our need for help. If you're convinced that you're OK and in the spiritual order, you can solve this problem yourself, you're not ready for the coming of the savior.
The prophet Isaiah is the great Old Testament Advent figure. Isaiah 63:17, 64:4, I think it's abeautiful point of meditation for all of us. From this passage, I selected three images, such as “ Way, Heart and God’s anger.” Each one is meant to evoke the sense of loss and pain and helplessness. Until we enter into the power of these images, we won't know what it's like to long for the Savior. So, what I want to do, is to look at this series of images, and my hope is that one or two of them maybe will speak to you that you'll say, yes that’s what how I feel. And when that happens, you're getting ready for the savior.
Path or Way :
“Why do you let us wander, oh Lord, from your ways?”
That's an ancient image. The Straight path or the Right Path. To be on the straight path or to walk on the right path is to know where you're going. Therefore, sin is a wandering off that path. It's getting lost. The path that we should know, we’velost track of it. we don't know anymore where we're going. This probably happens less today because of GPS systems. Some of you will remember in your early years of driving, so long before the GPS systems. You relied on maps or someone’s written directions that you'd find yourself lost. You know you're going along, the cars are working fine, and you're moving along, but you suddenly realize that you don't know where you are going and don't even know how to correct this problem. Probably older people remember that feeling. But now, because of GPS system, wherever I am, it'll get me out. But years ago, I remember being in those situations. I'm lost and I don't know how to fix the problem. 18 years ago, when I was learning how to drive in Saitama and Tochigi. So, I didn't know the city that well. And on one day I was driving, looking for my destination, mistakenly entered an expressway entrance and I just didn't know what to do. Eventually I reached my destination omehow. To enter into that feeling. That's the prophet Isaiah 's point that that I I've wandered from the path that leads me to God. And I don't know how to get backon it. When you enter into that spiritual space, you start longing for a savior.
2. The Heart.
Here's the second image from Is The heart.
“Why do you let us harden our hearts so that we fear you not?”
The heart doesn't mean the physical organ so much here, but the core of your person. That's the heart. What's the problem is a hard heart. Because God wants to shape our hearts so that we become his children and his followers. God wants to shape the core of us. so that we can be the people He wants us to be. When Saint Paul says, it's no longer I who live. It's Christ who lives in me. That's someone who has a soft heart here. I mean soft, so that God can shape it. Hardness of heart means my heart become like brittle clay. And so, when God tries to shape it, the heart shatters. What God desires is a supple heart. A heart that is ready to be shaped. This Advent let us reflect on that experience of hardness of heart. Are you resistant to what God wants you to do and wants you to be? If the heart is hard, as all of us sinners, I can't soften it through my own efforts. What do I need? I need grace. I need the incoming of that of that sacred rain that will soften the brittle heart.
3: God’s anger;
Here's a third image from Isaiah. “Behold, you are angry and we are sinful.
My generation was brought up with a sort of antipathy to the idea of God's anger. We never wanted to imagine God is angry. That was old fashioned spirituality. But Let me tell you, you can't avoid the anger of God in the Bible. It's on practically every other page of the Bible, is some reference to God's anger. But , it doesn't mean that God's fallen into some negative emotional state. So, don't think of it, as the way we become angry. God is not angry as we get angry sometimes. It's a metaphor to express God's passion to set things right. What we sinners properly feel is the anger of God, because we know that we're on the wrong path, we know our hearts have been hardened. We know that we're not the people that God wants us to be. And so, when we experience God, we experience him as angry with us. Again, let us not emotionalize the language and turn God into a dysfunctional father. For us sinners, the bad state of affairs is, we're not aware of God's anger with us and our alienation from God. God’s anger means he wants to correct us and bring us on the right track, so that we may be saved from the clutches of the devil.
Advent is a great time to get in touch with the fact that we're not the people God wants us to be. And that’s why, God has got a passion to set things right in us. If I'm OK and you're OK. Then who needs a savior? Who needs God, if I'm OK and you're OK.Things are off kilter with us and we experience God as angry, as desirous of setting things right. Move into that space and you're getting yourself ready for the coming of the Savior. Let us long for God, Jesus our savior by admitting our weaknesses and sins before Him. God Bless you.
Let's admit our weaknesses and sins before God, and
look forward for a happy encounter with our Savior,
Jesus Christ.

1. 道
